Notes & Scriptures

Ruth 1:1; Judges 6:1-5
– The state of Israel

Ruth 4:16
– Ruth is David’s great grandmother!

1 Samuel 22:1-4
– Saul is still King and he’s trying to kill David

Points
1-Forever together
2-Good luck is God’s blessings
3-God picked your family

Ruth 1:1-7
– The people are running from Bethlehem
– Bethlehem means house of bread
– Elimelech means God is King
– Naomi means God is gracious
– Mahlon weakly or sickly
– Kilion decay or death
– Orpah means turn back
– Ruth means friend
– Every character fulfills the destiny of their name

Ruth 1:2
– Ephrathites referred to here – although Bethlehem was originally Ephrath
– God gave them this land and they abandoned it and left to another land

Ruth 1:6-15
– Naomi chooses to go back to Gods people and be restored
– She’s so bitter she doesn’t believe in Gods promises that she can play a role to find husbands for her daughters in law
– Ruth is a Moabite (with her own gods and people)
– But she clings to Ruth and refuses to go back to Moab

1 – FOREVER TOGETHER

Ruth 1:16-19
– Ruth has more faith than Naomi does and chooses to stay with Naomi forever together
– The commitment to the Kingdom of God is to put God above everything (including your family)
– Ruth emanates that by refusing to go back to her family in Moab and to stay with God’s people

2 – GOOD LUCK IS GOD’S BLESSINGS

Ruth 1:19-22
– Mara means “bitter” and Naomi is bitter and she believes God has afflicted her
– v21 “I went away full but The Lord has brought me back empty”
– The bitterness warps her mind and deceives her from the truthful circumstances in her life
– Naomi didn’t have anything when she left Israel
– There was a famine and she actually had nothing
– When she returns to Israel she has people there that love her
– There’s also a full harvest awaiting and a completely loyal daughter in law
– Bitterness deceives you

Hebrews 3:12-13
– Be careful of sin because it hardens your heart and deceives you (i.e. Naomi is deceived by her bitterness)
– Do we have any bitterness in our hearts?
– Do we believe that God has a plan for any affliction in our lives?

Ruth 2:1-3
– Atheists don’t believe in God – they only believe in “luck”

Proverbs 3:5-10
– Put God first and trust Him and He will take care of you

Ruth 2:4-12
– Ruth believes God’s promises and she has faith and trust in God and He starts to provide for her!
– v10 under God’s wings you find refuge

Exodus 25:10; 16-22
– The ark holds God’s Spirit
– It was the holiest place on Earth
– Too holy to be touched by any man so placed in the specifically-made ark
– The wings were made to cover the ark of the covenant
– To be “under God’s wings” was to be where he covers the holiest place where His presence resides
– The most intimate place you can be is under God’s wings and among where His presence lies
– That is to be in a relationship with God
– Every disciple who has chosen to commit their whole life to God (much like Ruth) is under God’s wings

3 – GOD PICKED YOUR FAMILY

Ruth 2:13-19
– Boaz sees Ruth and is “smitten” by her and her commitment to God
– He finds favor in her (thus God provides for Ruth through Boaz)

Acts 17:26-28
– God determines time and places for all men
– God has providence in people’s lives
– There is no “luck”

Who is Boaz?
Matthew 1:3, 5-6, 16
– Jesus’ lineage
– Rahab (the prostitute) was the mother of Boaz and he marries Ruth (not even of the people of God)
– Solomon was son of Bathsheba and Mary conceived out of wedlock (if you don’t believe the immaculate conception)
– In the world’s eyes there are 5 women of the Savior of the world who aren’t above repute
– God determines your genetics for a reason!
– Ruth was likely written into defense to the Moabite heritage of God’s people

Mark 3:31-35
– Christina is the fruit of James’ sacrifice for God’s kingdom over 10 years ago (not a coincidence)
– Jesus’ family are the people who choose to make God more important than all
– Not even his physical family is of that importance!

Quoted song from Les Miserables
Take my hand
I’ll lead you to salvation
Take my love
For love is everlasting
And remember
The truth that once was spoken
To love another person
Is to see the face of God.

Do you hear the people sing
Lost in the valley of the night?
It is the music of a people
Who are climbing to the light.

For the wretched of the earth
There is a flame that never dies.
Even the darkest night will end
And the sun will rise.

They will live again in freedom
In the garden of the Lord.
We will walk behind the ploughshare;
We will put away the sword.
The chain will be broken
And all men will have their reward.

Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Somewhere beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
Do you hear the people sing?
Say, do you hear the distant drums?
It is the future that they bring
When tomorrow comes!

Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Somewhere beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
Do you hear the people sing?
Say, do you hear the distant drums?
It is the future that they bring
When tomorrow comes!
